What’s in a name?
Barlume [Italian]: spark

6 weeks into my very first corporate job, I was struggling to find my place. Fresh out of school, I was the only marketer in the building.

Not only did my supervisor not have a background in marketing, but he also consistently accused me of not doing my work. As the sole marketer in the company, I had a long list of tasks to do for several different departments. I tracked all of my work and was able to prove it was being completed, however the accusations continued.

As a lifelong perfectionist, the idea of failing at something was eating me alive. Especially because it was something I cared about deeply. I believed I was in the wrong field, that I had made a terrible mistake and should go back to school to pursue a different career.

It was a small company, so I raised my concerns with the VP and CEO. I explained the circumstances – that I know I’m smart, so I didn’t understand why my supervisor was treating me otherwise. The response I received from the CEO?

“I didn’t hire you because I think you’re smart. I hired you because you have a spark. You aren’t smart, but I can help cultivate that spark into something great. I can turn you into something great.”

So I quit.

And now, here I am, with my spark. Barlume.
